Developing the understanding of buoyancy through a range of skills, refining kicking technique for all strokes, and swimming 1 metres to a given standard as directed by the ASA.
CRITERIA for STAGE FOUR
At this stage children learn buoyancy through a range of skills, refining their kicking technique for all strokes and swimming 10 metres to ASA standard.

Before they can progress to the next stage they must be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of buoyancy

Perform a tuck float for 5 seconds

Perform a sequence of changing shapes (minimum of three) whilst floating at the surface

Push and glide from the wall to the pool floor

Kick 10m backstroke (one item of equipment optional)

Kick 10m front crawl (one item of equipment optional)

Kick 10m butterfly on the front or on the back

Kick 10m breastroke on the back (equipment optional)

Kick 10m breastroke on the front (equipment optional)

Perform on the back a head first sculling action for 5 metres in a horizontal position.

Travel on the back and roll in one continuous movement onto front

Travel on front and roll in one continuous movement onto back

Swim 25m front and back

Perform 3 different shaped jumps into deep water
Stage 4 - Prelim Safety Award
(No aids to be used throughout)

Enter water with a swivel entry, walk 5m away from the side, turn through 1800 and return to the side

Jump into shoulder depth water, turn to hold the side, travel hand over hand to the steps and climb out

Enter the water if at least full reach depth with swivel entry, hold the side with one hand, release the hand and tread water for 10 seconds, exit the water

Travel 5m on the front, rotate onto the back and kick 5m to the side, fully submerge the head showing confidence and control-preliminary safety award
*Travel is any means of moving independently around the pool with feet off the bottom
